It was my first non-combat experience, and I think it went really well. In all, I was really happy in how this encounter went. I decided to give him a +1 to AC until the end of the next encounter for his prayer, further enhancing the depth at the table. The Dragonborn Paladin, who worships the platinum dragon, Bahamut, was pleased to find an altar dedicated to its likeness. Each rolled arcana and religion checks to determine what they each did. The players quickly dealt with the eight Kobold Tunnelers in the next room and explored all of the altars and runes behind the curtained rooms. With the previous reluctance in role playing at the entrance of the dungeon and the straight up hack-and-slash fighting in their first encounter, I was happy that my coaching was having some payoff. I awarded the Cleric an extra 50 XP for getting into character. Pleased in having escaped unharmed, they were glad to receive their share of the 350 experience points.

The player running the Dwarven Cleric was really getting in to this, and the rest at the table were equally impressed.

You are indeed powerful and we are at your mercy." I asked the player who had been doing all the talking to roll at 12 or higher, and he smiled when the die came up 15 not needing to factor in his modifiers. The players decided that they weren't willing to part with additional treasure, and decided to bluff their way past that end of the bargain. If you are not true to your word, I will not hesitate to kill you all." However, should you find anything else of value, you must bring it to me. Please, let us pass and we will not trouble you further." With the dice rolling in their favor, their third diplomacy check passed, and I decided that they successfully won the dragon over. We only want the item that Malareth stole. "And I supposed you would do this for a share of my treasure?" "Oh, great dragon, we too understand the trouble these Kobolds can be, having already slain a few, and would be happy to rid your lair of their presence." Second diplomacy check passed as well. The Lawful Good characters equally protested saying that it wasn't right to hit and run, that the dragon's treasure isn't what brought them to the dungeon. The others disagreed, not yet ready to engage such a creature. One of the other players heard the word "treasure" and her eyes grew wide, saying that maybe they should kill the dragon and take his treasure. I seeded the conversation with hints of what the dragon is hoping to hear from them.

Sometimes, I wonder if they have designs for my treasure. His filthy Kobolds are constantly skittering about, making a lot of noise. "That human has been a nuisance in my lair for some time.
